2 Years Stock Taking – A Look Into The Future!

I want to welcome all our esteemed friends and readers to the month of September. We’ve gradually moved to the last quarter of the year. And frankly it has been a wonderful year.

As we step into this month I want to do something very different from what I always do on the first day of the month, that is, announcing our top commentator for the month. I’m doing this because this month of September marks the second year of this blog. Precisely, on the …. of 2008 the first post on the home business marketing blog was published.

The journey has been one of great expectations and of course great hope. I must say so far it has not turned out the way I expected when I started. But it has been a journey I’ve enjoyed all the way. I’ve learnt a lot of things. Being the first blog I started the home business marketing blog was actually a launching pad for other ventures.

The past few weeks I’ve been doing a lot of stock taking with the mind of deciding on the way forward. Enough lessons have been learnt these past two years. So I’ve chosen a new direction for this blog.

A New Domain Name Is Under Way!

The first major change will be the domain name. Frankly I’ve been thinking of this for a long time. Right from the very begining when I started using this domain name I knew something was wrong some where. When I purchased the domain name I was thinking of making it a brand but it never turned out that way.

To help you understand the situation let me give you a picture of what led to the choice of themarketingmouse.com.

Marketing: Initially themarketingmouse.com was a static content publishing site. And the focus was online marketing information. I started it in the form of a magazine with the content updated weekly. The focus was to provide free marketing tips and tools for newbie internet marketers and home business entrepreneurs. So that determined the choice of the word “marketing” in the url.

Mouse: On the choice of “Mouse” I must say this was where the idea of branding was focused. After brainstorming on what domain name to pick, I considered that since the site will be providing online marketing information I should go for something like clickmarketing.com or click2wealth.com, or market4profit.com. While researching I discovered some of these names were already taken. It was then it came to me that since I’ll be talking about ‘clicking a mouse’ to market a business on the net why not, “marketingmouse.com”. And then to be very specific I added “the” to the combination. And seeing that this domain name was free, I simply went for it.

Wondering then why I want to change it?

Ok, let me tell you that also.

Soon after I designed and put the site online I discovered from the site stats that most of the visits from the search engines were coming from people searching for the word “marketing mouse!” A further check revealed that this was so because of the domain name since I wasn’t providing that information neither was I really targeting those keywords. Of course you know what that means – untargeted traffic!

I tried doing something about it like researching more about ‘marketing mouse’ and trying to provide some related information. But it really did not work out since the focus of the site was not about computers and accessories. I tried also putting up amazon affiliate links that has to do with ‘marketing mouse’ but still the visits were looking for something else as the bounce rate of the site was very high then.

It was only when I changed the site to a blog that I learnt I could really have the site name different from the domain name. And that is what I’d to do ever since but that has not really stop a few such related traffic from the search engines. However, being a blog has helped so much since the search engines now rank this blog for many of my target keywords. So for now I think it is the right time to change the domain name.

Running The Site As A Blog

Let me quickly tell you why I later changed from web 1.0 static website to a web 2.0 blog.

Like I mentioned above the site was running as a weekly updated online magazine providing marketing information for home business entrepreneurs and newbie internet marketers. Now the challenge for me then was to constantly build html pages, load them up to the site weekly and then work on the home page (index page) to reflect the change. If you’ve created html pages you will understand what I’m trying to point out here. It was simply cumbersome and hard work to me. But I had to do it.

It was while running it this way with all the trouble involved that I came to know of blogging. Well, the first time I never really considered it. But after reading a few ebooks and doing some more research I discovered that I could really over come the problem of creating and loading up web pages every week by simply using a blog. This really interested me so much that after much consideration I pulled down all the web pages and installed wordpress. Today all that is history. I’ve come far enough that today if anyone ask me to go back building static websites I’ll gladily refuse such a one. Infact, I’ve discovered that I can really build static websites quickly and easily using wordpress.

I think I’ve told enough to let you have an idea why I’m now thinking of having a major change here. Very soon you’ll be seeing a new domain name. I’m not thinking of starting all over. No! What I’ll simply do is move the contents here to the new domain name and then redirect this url to that domain name. I know I have some good content here and I don’t want to abadon them. Besides, I don’t want to add to the other blogs I’m running for now. They are already taking too much of my time so there is no need to add more.

I hope you do understand with me. I endeavour to do my best in the days ahead to ensure that you get what you trully deserve!

Temple Grandin Inspired Movie Create Waves At Grammy’s Awards!

In our world where most of what you hear is nothing but negetatives, one can not but be moved when you come across some piece of news that is inspiring indeed. That is why I’ve decided to mention this video news I’ve just came across on yahoo.com

In the just concluded 62nd Grammy’s awards a movie inspired by an extraordinary autistic woman named Temple Grandin swept away a total of 7 awards. You may want to know that this movie had 15 nominations including the coveted Outstanding Made for Television Movie Award.

It is not just the fact that many Emmy viewers were hearing of this name for the first time that touched me but the story behind this extraordinary woman. If you know anything about autism then you would appreciate what this woman stands for.

Here’s an excerpt from the yahoo video page:

Grandin, who was diagnosed with autism in 1950 at the age of 2, went on to earn multiple advanced degrees, including a doctorate in animal science from the University of Illinois. She is considered one of the top advocates of both autism-spectrum understanding and animal welfare, and might be best-known for her invention of more humane slaughterhouse practices, for which she has been recognized by PETA.

Can you imagine that? At a time when much was not known about autism and the various ways of handling it, this woman was diagnosed with the disease. But rather than give up to her fate, she rose to be a voice in her own right! And this is what inspired the movie that swept away so many awards.

This just points to the fact that nothing is impossible in this life. You can change your fate by your faith! Many people may not give you the chance but whatever you do in life, you first need to believe in yourself and move on to achieve your dreams.

I’m truly motivated by this news and I feel I should share it with you here. If someone who, in the estimation of many, was not expected to do much in life could achieve so much, there is hope for you no matter what you may be passing through in life. You may be struggling to make it in your business, family or personal life, that doesn’t matter. There is hope for you!

Don’t give up; be fired up!

Of course moments like this are always possible because of those who made them happen, just as producer Emily Gerson Saines mentioned in her acceptance speech as she called out Grandin’s mother, Eustacia Cutler, “On behalf of all the parents like myself who have a child with autism, you are our hero.” She is indeed a hero to have weathered the storm and raised such an inspiring child.

Google Search Result Latest: A PLUS or …?

A few days ago Google announced a new way of showing search results. With this new system google will be showing more results from one domain on the first page. Before now only two results can be shown from one domain.

See the example that google has for us:

In the graphic above you’ll see that for a search for “exhibitions at amnh” google returned 4 pages on www.amnh.org. According to the google team, this “will help users find deeper results from a single site, while still providing diversity on the results page”.

Already there is a great debate going on about this change. While many found this to be a great thing others see it as something that will favour only the big ‘guys’. For example, showing so many results for only one domain will push the smaller domains down the page therefore hiding them from view.

But are all these concerns by the small domains any thing to think about? Don’t you think there are still ways to overcome this?

Having read the official google blog where this announcement was made, it dawn on me that this is really a chance for sites and blogs that are focused on a particular theme. So if your blog is focused on a niche and your content are tailored towards that niche, then you have a better chance of having more results on google first page if someone searches for your target keywords.

Well, for now I’m really hoping this will work out fine for us all. Or what do you think?

Shot short content rich videos and host them free on youtube.com. Provide a link back to your business site so that people who watch your videos can also find you. Besides, you can also post these videos on your blog by simply taking the code provided by youtube.com and posting it on your blog.

4. Write Articles – This one has always been there from the very beginning of the internet and it still remains one of the best. The internet is indeed an information super high way. People today depend on the internet to get the information they need. And the search engines remain the first point of call when it comes to getting information on the net. The search engines love article directories just as they do blogs. Your articles on your blog and on article directories will ensure that you expand the area of your influence on the net. Commit yourself to writing and submitting articles to article directories.

The whole idea here is to get your business image out there. Propagate yourself and your business. Let people find you all over the place. You’ll want to do this so that whenever someone searches for information related to your niche they will easily find you.

I’ve thought of talking about this for sometime now. However other commitments have taken me off for the past few days. Besides, I discovered a few days ago that the blog theme was breaking. You see I’ve just discovered that there are some high traffic blogs out there that will gladly allow you to post your content for free. Maybe you’re wondering what is different with this and guest posting?

Well there are just a few differences. You know with guest blog posting you will have a hard time being accepted on some of these high traffic blogs. Especially if you’re just starting out. After a careful search I’ve come to realize that the dream of many of us who are online is to be self employed. We want to escape the office politics. We desire freedom to do our own thing and succeed doing so. Though many of us have this dream all along, the advent of the internet and the economic reality around the world today has made this dream of self employment a thing of urgency.

I don’t know about you but this is the reality for me. That is why I’m always seeking to understand what it takes to make this dream a reality for me. Already, the Small Business Administration (SBA) reports an estimate of 580,900 new small businesses being opened every year. Of course, this number does not include the self employed one-person entrepreneurships that pop up all the time, mostly online.

From their records the SBA, reports that two-thirds of these estimated 580,900 new businesses being started every year, survive at least two years and 44 percent survive at least four years. And of course the two key factors responsible for this survival and ability to thrive is the owner’s education level and reason for starting the firm in the first place. I do hope you’ll mark that!

Now, there are definitely thousands of legitimate home based businesses that any one who wants to be self employed can choose from. But the truth told is that your success in working from home does not depend solely on the home business opportunity you pick. This can be seen from the SBA report. You may have been told it is the best opportunity ever. But your success depends mostly on one person and that is YOU!

This therefore shows that if you must succeed as a self employed entrepreneur, there are specific steps you must take to realize your dream. This does not mean you’ve to understand everything before stepping out to start your own business. All you need is the basics and as you go along you simply need to build on what you know and dedicate yourself to learn more. So if you will truly want to join the group of the successful home business, self-employed entrepreneurs, all you need is to concentrate on answering the following questions. Get yourself a pen and a paper or create a blank note pad on your computer (if you’re more keen on using your computer) and provide answers to these questions.

Step 1: What Is Your Business?

This is another crucial step that you must focus on. Having defined what your business is, you need to know who need what you’re offering. How much you know about your target audience is key to your business success. You need to know what they do, where they hang out, whether they are online or off-line, what television programs they watch and of course a few more things that will help you truly define your target market. If you’re able to correctly answer this question you’ll save yourself many a heartache when it comes to devising a marketing strategy.

Step 3: What Should Be Your Marketing Strategy?

Having known what your business (brand) is and who your consumer is, the next step is to determine how you’re going to reach them. If you’ve answered the first two questions above, the question of your marketing strategy will simply take care of itself. When you know where your customers hang out, you should be able to know where to advertise. Knowing who they are will determine the voice of your brand. And of course your knowledge of the market will help you set prices that are reasonable for your market demographic. It is reasonable however to find out where other businesses from your industry are already advertising as they would have tried and tested many options before settling with the ones they are using. And on how much to charge for your product or service, it is advisable to keep your charges fairly low at the outset in order to attract as many customers. Once you’ve been able to create a buzz and the word of mouth is in your favour you could then raise your fees.

Your dream of being self employed running your own business working at home can become a reality if you’ll focus on these areas. It is important to realize that you may make mistakes along the way but don’t let that deter you. Stay positive no matter what happens. Don’t beat ourselves up. Count it as an experience you can learn from. Besides learning from your own example, seek advice from those who have done it. Read books written by self employed entrepreneurs who have braced the odds and have succeeded in their own businesses. You too can make it.

This bears down to one fact, targeting the diet market is a lucrative business. But truth be told, this is also a very competitive market right now. If you must target the diet market then you must be ready to be more creative in your marketing and business approach.

2. Alternative Health

Health is wealth as the saying goes and any reasonable human being will do anything to stay healthy. This has increased, considerably, the heath consciousness amongst the populace thereby increasing the number of products in the market that cater to this need. The bid to keep the human body healthy has increased the introduction of diverse alternative health products. Tea, ginseng, and Acai berries are some of these products that are in good circulation today. Any entrepreneur who knows his onions can always tap into this lucrative alternative medicine business.

3. Organic Food

You surely have heard about genetically modified organism or the GMO. You surely have heard about the possible effects it may do to the body. And with this concern, there is an exponential increase of the number of people who are becoming more and more careful on the type of food they eat. Since organic foods are 100% safe and clean, the market for this business is indeed growing. A little research could turn up some possible ways of tapping into this business.

4. High Tech Security System Or Biometrics

Security is another human need that is fast becoming the concern of many. Whether you’re a home owner or a businessman you definitely should be concerned about security. Today a simple door lock wouldn’t do. There is the increasing demand for high tech security systems that will limit the access of your facilities to those you have granted the access. Of course, these are just possible business ideas and though the possibility of growth is huge, you must note that going into any of these businesses is not an automatic ticket to the good life. 1. European Bedding Is one of our top commentators for the month of July. A niche blog that focuses on bedding, European bedding have so much information about something that is so dear to our hearts but yet so much overlooked. Or do you really think much about your bed? Maybe you’re much different from me because I don’t. But do you enjoy the comfort of your bed everyday? Oh yes, I do! I don’t know what it will feel like if I’m forced to sleep on the bare floor for a few hours! So do you want to get a few words about this comfortable piece of furniture in your home? Let me point though that the blog is kind of bare. I don’t know why European bedding (well, we have to call him/her that since we don’t have any other info) after paying for a domain and host could not do some little customization on the blog. I think there is so much on the blosphere to help anyone do a simple customization of a blog. Even on this blog, the Home Business Marketing Blog, we have good info and tutorials on blog customization. So European bedding we are using this medium to call on you make your blog a little appealing. You have some fantastic content. Don’t let it waste!

2. Nursing Schools is our second winner for the month. Both nursing schools and european bedding had 5 comments each. And so both of them are getting a slot each of our free banner ad.

Unfortunately, there is no website link for nursing schools. We only hope that nursing schools will provide us with a 125 X 125 banner for the display.

Both european beddings and nursing schools will be contacted through email and once their banner ad is recieved they will be featured.
